As a frequent user of e-mail and a frequent maker of prayer, I began to liken prayer to e-mail. I saw that my prayers are always "To: God@heaven.org". Sometimes I send "Cc:" — copies of my prayers to my friends by asking them to pray as well. Sometimes I send God "attachments" to my prayers when I go on at some length telling Him about the situation I'm concerned about, before I realize that He already knows all about it!

Replies to prayers "From: God@heaven.org" come in many forms. Sometimes, we receive news about our prayer "Subject: …". While at Bible reading and study, we find answers. We hear something in a sermon or even, sometimes, intuitively sense an "aha" moment. We see things as we move about in God's creation. We keep tuned for and receive incoming God-mail all the time. His messages are always positive, maybe surprising, often amusing, encouraging, hopeful, touching, caring, kind, amazing, and gentle. We will never receive this message about our God-mail: "Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender."

Here is a Scripture passage that hints at my experience of God-mail:

Hebrews 11:6 – But without faith it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out]. (AMP)

How about each of us starting a new piece of God-mail today? It could be saved in our "Drafts" folder or started on a fresh, dated sheet of paper, with the salutation, "Dear God". After we start the conversation, we can then anticipate and savour His loving reply.

Prayer: Father, may we earnestly and diligently seek You out. Remind us to come boldly to Your throne of grace in the name of Christ Jesus, our Mediator and Your Son! May we know in full measure Your rewards, pleasure, and satisfaction. Amen.
