A Light From Heaven

Acts 9:3-5 – As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" "Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he replied. (NIV)

Ministries like Voice of the Martyrs and Open Doors are working to raise awareness of the tremendous problems affecting the lives of thousands of Christians around the world. Image galleries, personal testimonies, and monthly newsletters help to put a human face on the persecuted church. As the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church approaches on the second Sunday of November (on the first Sunday in Canada to avoid Remembrance Day), let us prepare by listening to the voice of our persecuted brothers and sisters. Let us hear their plea for the heartbreaking injustices they are made to endure, simply because they believe in Jesus.

These are but a few examples that still exist across the globe:

• In Iraq, Christian families are leaving their homes in large numbers because of death threats and violence against them.
• In Pakistan, a young Christian mother, Asia Bibi, is currently facing execution for blasphemy; numerous others are being falsely accused.
• In Bangladesh and other places, Christians are often denied the use of village wells, leaving them with contaminated drinking water.
• In some parts of Nigeria, Sunday morning worship is often interrupted by deadly assaults.

In today's Scripture, Saul of Tarsus was on his way to persecute the church in Damascus. Imagine his surprise when he encountered the glorified Christ — he literally fell off his high horse! A light from heaven revealed to Saul that it was Jesus' voice that he was attempting to silence. So, from that day forward, Saul's life was transformed, and his name was changed to Paul. In a matter of moments, he changed from persecutor to the persecuted.

Some time ago, at the funeral service of a murdered Christian leader, the minister spoke these words: "For every stone that is being thrown, another Paul will rise." For that reason, our prayers are not only for the church, but also for those who will come to Christ through them.

Centuries after Paul's Damascus road meeting with Jesus, the good news of the gospel continues to prosper, despite the evil one's unceasing efforts to thwart God's plan. Thankfully, the same glorious light that showed Paul the way still shines brightly to guide, protect, and strengthen the church.

Let us consider how we as believers can unite with those who are suffering for Christ. In what ways can we experience their fellowship, in times of sorrow, as well as joy? Let us consider how we might share our gifts of love and encouragement for this important cause.

Prayer: Lord God, watch over the persecuted members of Your body who are redeemed by Your precious blood and called by Your name. Let the radiance of the risen Lord shine upon them to renew their strength and fill their hearts with peace. With one voice, may we glorify You together, as we share the blessings that we have received with those in need. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
