It had been a few weeks since we'd had rain. Looking out my living room window, I saw that the green grass had turned to a brownish colour. Walking on the grass, we heard the crunching sound made when the ground is completely dry and parched. Our area was under a fire ban, as well as a watering ban, withholding much-needed water for our plants, flowers, grass, and trees. We could actually see the leaves drooping from lack of water.

Pondering this dry spell, I thought about our spiritual life. Sometimes we go through a period of drought, a period of dryness in our lives when it seems that God is far from us. Things happen in our lives that leave us feeling like we are all alone and frightened. We pray, but nothing happens. We wonder if things will ever change for the better. We cry out to God, only to be left in silence.

Psalm 42:1-2a – As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. (NASB)

It is at times like these that we must remember the promises that God provides for us in His Word.

Isaiah 55:1a – Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters. (NASB)

John 4:14 – [Jesus said,] "But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life." (NASB)

My friends, if we are going through a dry spell in our lives, let us turn to the One who quenches our thirst and fills us up. All we have to do is ask.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, we come to You like the Samaritan woman at the well. Satisfy our spiritual thirst and quench the dryness within us. Fill us with Your living waters of hope, peace, and love. Amen.
