John 7:37b-38a – Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. (NRSV)

I had heard of a spring where one could go for drinking water. I packed bottles in my car and drove the distance to fill them with clear water.

The drive in itself through the country was enjoyable. Rolling fields pulsated with ripening crops as the earth yielded its fruit. As I arrived at the fountain I had heard of, I could hear the sound of gushing water a distance away. Bottles filled quickly, and one moved aside to let the next person get the water. There were many others waiting for their turn. Many had come from long distances to draw water. Payment was voluntary and each would drop their donation in a box.

I was glad that I had heard of the pure, sweet water. Bottles I had filled would last me a long time, but when empty, I would be coming for more, as the others would. We would be thirsty again.

The Bible tells of living water. The Good Shepherd guides us to His living well and quenches our thirst forever. God's Word walks us through our need of a Saviour, who is ready to open His springs of life, once we are thirsting for the living God, as a deer longing for flowing streams, and call upon Him.

The woman at the well of Samaria learned of this spring of water when Jesus spoke of the living water that He has.

John 4:13-14 – Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life." (NRSV)

The earthly wells of this world's material goods dry up. They can become contaminated. The world's springs leave us unsatisfied. Jesus Christ is an ever-flowing source of living water never to dry up, never to leave us thirsty again. As did the woman at the well, let us draw of the living water in Jesus.

Prayer: Thanks be to You, O God, for the living water of Jesus the Messiah. Thank You for offering the Samaritan woman and us this life-giving water. Amen.
