Mark 10:43b-45 – But whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. (NASB)

Our membership had moved to their first church building. I became involved in an activity which gave birth to our women's ministry, which in itself contributed to the overall growth of the church. The women began a monthly luncheon, inviting the women of the community for a time of fellowship and spiritual growth. I became involved in the whole project with a great deal of enthusiasm by setting up tables, serving meals, and providing clean-up after each event. I worked very hard, doing my very best, wanting us to succeed. We experienced growth in a short period of time with a high attendance of 110 ladies. Moreover, I realized that what had transpired in my life was a step in spiritual growth: learning how to be a servant of the Lord.

The concept of "the Servant of the Lord" was deeply rooted in the history of the nation of Israel. The term was frequently applied to Moses, Joshua, and David. Through the prophet Isaiah, God made a promise concerning His Servant, the Messiah. The New Testament writers are unanimous in stating that this prophecy was fulfilled by Jesus:

Isaiah 42:1 – Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. (NIV)

As Jesus' mission was that of a servant, so must ours be. Opportunities arise when we can be of service to those around us. We often let them slip by or don't see them at all. Being in tune with the Holy Spirit will guide us to the needs of another. What comes to mind is that when we have made a large pot of soup, we could offer to take some to a sick or elderly friend or neighbour who may need our help. Another opportunity may come when we can perform a physical task for a person who has a handicap. Then, there may be someone who needs a spiritual lift by praying with them.

Prayer: Thank You for giving us opportunities to be servants of the Lord. We ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to us what He would have us do. Help us to act upon these revelations. Show us how to tend to the needs of others, and give us joyful hearts as we seek to serve You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
