It happened so quickly and unexpectedly. In a split second, there was darkness. Our source of power, which we take for granted, was taken from us. Apparently, lightning struck a transformer not too far away from us which caused this surprising interruption in our lives. I could feel the panic slowly creeping into my body and brain as we were confronted with no television, no computer, no water, no lights, and no flushing toilets! The only source of light was the soft glow of two candles on the coffee table in the living room.

While I was waiting for the power to return, I decided to write about this incident. But trying to write on a sheet of paper instead of using the keyboard is a real challenge, especially when light is limited.

I am sure that we all have experienced a power outage at one time or another and found ourselves in sudden darkness. But it was this incident that made me think of how the world was created.

Genesis 1:1,2a,3 – In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. (NASB)

But man and woman were tempted and strayed from God's presence and accepted darkness instead of light.

Isaiah 9:2 – The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them. (NASB)

But God loved us so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to be our Saviour and Light.

John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. (NASB)

John 8:12 – Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life." (NASB)

Prayer: Creator God, we thank You for loving us so much that You gave us Your Son, Jesus, to die on a cross for us. You rescued us from darkness and continue to rescue us when we fall or are tempted. Help us to walk as children of the light. Amen.
