2 Kings 6:17 – Then Elisha prayed and said, "O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see." So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. (ESV)

I sat in the garden with Sophia, between three and four weeks old, looking up at the clouds, when I spied a rainbow. Now this was not the normal sort of rainbow that has an arch which comes down to a mythical pot of gold. This was way up high, above the clouds.

Apparently rainbows are possible, as a flattened arc, made by tiny ice crystals (instead of raindrops) in the upper atmosphere of the evening or morning sky, when the angle of the sun is low.

It was even more spectacular when large dark clouds rolled in front of the rainbow, to obscure it from view. Still, the light emanating from the rainbow shone through the gaps in the rolling clouds and lit up their periphery.

As I looked straight up into the sky, holding this new bundle of life, wondering what all this meant, I sensed a moment of wonder.

I think it was God's way of saying, "Remember me? I AM still your Saviour, Sustainer, and Provider: trust Me to help because I am the awesome God!"

God always brings good gifts to His servants. If it is not good, then it is not from God. Yes, we play our part, but it is God's will that always prevails, no matter what negative influences that the world, our circumstances, or our lack of faith may conjure up to thwart His purpose in us.

We need to keep on looking to Jesus, where our salvation comes from, no matter whether life seems good or bad. Take heart! It is quite possible that, like Elisha's servant, we may not be able to see the true reality of our circumstances — unless God opens our eyes.

Prayer: Lord, forgive us when we are intimidated or misdirected from trust in You by life's little surprises. Please open our eyes that we may comprehend the enormity of a God who is for us and not against us. You are a God who delights in a faithful servant. Enable us to be just that, in all situations. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
