Proverbs 30:28 – A lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings' palaces. (NIV)

Recently, upon hearing long-distance the news of my aunt's death, many childhood memories came to mind. Reminiscing about the family trips and visits to my aunt's home in Puerto Rico, I particularly remembered enjoying sitting on her front porch overlooking a busy highway below. There, in the midst of noise and traffic, I frequently had the distinct, often motionless company of numerous little tropical lizards similar to the one mentioned in today's passage of Scripture. Like it or not, they were there to stay, and I had to adjust to their presence: a typical daily experience.

Insignificant and rather unnoticed, these small yet amazing creatures are mentioned in the book of wisdom. Though easily caught by the hand, the lizard of Proverbs slips by the guards and boldly finds its way into the king's palace. Picture with me, if you will, these scaly-looking miniature reptiles being surrounded by the refined culture and breathtaking beauty of magnificent riches, elegance, and grace.

What spiritual lessons are we to learn from this biblical proverb? Though several applications can be made, the one I find most outstanding is the image of God's marvellous grace toward us sinners, whereby we may attain access to the Lord's throne of mercy, through God's provision of His Son Jesus, who is "the way, and the truth, and the life" (John 14:6 NIV). Like the lowly lizard, we, too, may have a place in the King's palace.

Therefore, without hesitation, we can now with confidence boldly enter His Majesty's chamber and draw near His presence with a grateful heart. May His sanctuary be a quiet refuge away from the hustle and bustle of life, a comforting place of peace in a dark, unsettling world.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, without Your grace we would be lost forever. We give You our heartfelt thanks for sending Your Son to take away our sins. We honour You for the priceless gift and matchless blessings we receive in Jesus' holy name. Amen.
