It's that time of year again when we need either to change over to our snow tires or to purchase new ones. There is a saying which goes, The more things change, the more they stay the same.

When I was little and even into my twenties, it went without saying that people had summer tires and winter tires — and also, for those of us who lived in northern climes, chains.

Then came the time when all-season tires were the newest and most wonderful invention. In most cases, there was no need to have two sets of tires. Ahhh, but that is no longer the case. First, we went to needing only two winter tires. Now, however, no one will sell us just two; we need to buy all four. So it's back to the original method.

Just as in those earlier days, the old tested, tried, and true method proves to offer us the best sense possible of safety, security, and protection on rainy, snowy, and icy roads. This does not mean we are guaranteed to be completely free from all harm on the roads, for we never know what the other guy may do. What it does mean, is that by using the proper tires and driving responsibly, we are giving ourselves and our passengers the best opportunity to get safely through the different weather conditions. Today's improved rubber on all four tires can provide better low-temperature traction.

Is it not that way also with our belief system? No matter how many changes we may go through on our spiritual journey, the old, original, basic lessons of God's love prove true. Being safe and protected in His care does not mean that we will not ever experience unpleasantness, disappointment, rough patches, or heartache. What it does mean, is that our faith and belief in His love will help us through these differing times.

Prayer: Thank You, God, that You remain constant throughout our spiritual journey, our comings and goings, our changing times and new ways to worship You, and You are always there for us. Thank You that the lessons we learned of Your love in the beginning are the same today as they were then. Thank You that the more we change, the more You stay the same. Through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour, we offer our thanks. Amen.
