Hebrews 12:2a – Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. (NIV)

1 Corinthians 12:13 – For by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. (KJV)

Before moving to Delaware, USA, ten years ago, I attended a Bible study in Pennsylvania with Christians from various backgrounds and denominations. This unique ministry was called "Jesus Focus", and began in 1974 at a time when many churches failed to provide a Bible study ministry. In its early stages, a small group of individuals met in homes under the leadership of the late Richard Weir. Later, this ministry grew and expanded to include a beautiful teaching centre built in 1988. It still serves the same community.

Like a quilt of various colours and patterns, "Jesus Focus" ministry taught me the significance of worship through prayer, praise, and Bible study as one body. By looking to Jesus and fixing our eyes upon Him, how could there be discord among believers? In exalting the name and lordship of our Saviour, we can experience harmony in worship. Though it is impossible to achieve this unity by our own works alone, Paul exhorts us in Ephesians 4:3 to "make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." (NIV) When we yield ourselves to the Father's will, Jesus' prayer is fulfilled in John 17:11 – "Holy Father, protect them by the power of Your Name … so that they may be one as we are one." (NIV)

With a variety of personalities, abilities, and gifts, may our Lord be glorified as we fellowship together in one accord — looking to Jesus whose Spirit is alive and active in those who put their trust in Him.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help Your church to worship You as one body in the fellowship of Your Spirit. Keep our eyes upon Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Bless us with the light of Your presence, and inhabit the praises of Your people, that the world may know that there is one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. May Your holy name be exalted now and forever. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
