Isaiah 53:7 – He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. (NIV)

Most of us likely know the expression, "Silence speaks louder than words." Years of experience have taught me that this proverb is true. Sometimes, I can give a better testimony simply by being silent, much to the disappointment of some people who are just looking to find fault. Perhaps there have also been times in life when you thought it best to say nothing. This was certainly the case as our Saviour faced charges against Him before the Sanhedrin, Pilate, and Herod.

Mark 14:60-61a – Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. (NIV)

Matthew 27:13-14 – Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?" But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge — to the great amazement of the governor. (NIV)

Luke 23:8a,9 – When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased. He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer. (NIV)

In today's Scripture, Isaiah prophesied that the "Lamb of God" would remain silent before His accusers and those who unjustly condemned Him. When under oath He did answer, he did so with confidence and authority, speaking the truth that would be turned against Him. Throughout history, many Christians have also taken a stand for the truth, and for many, it literally cost them their lives.

Ecclesiastes 3:7b – … a time to be silent and a time to speak, … (NIV)

Jesus demonstrated the wisdom of Ecclesiastes as witnesses gave their false testimony to convict Him. He did not need to justify Himself but endured to the end, trusting in the perfect will of His heavenly Father. With God's guidance and grace, we also can discern when the time is best to speak out and when silence is a more effective witness for Christ.

Prayer: Lord, give us the courage and strength to take a stand for the truth. Help us to remain faithful to You in all situations, as we look to You for wisdom and guidance. Amen.
