I have noticed in our travels some very uninviting environments where the people are very poor. The water is at a public faucet or a water truck, or existence requires many hours hauling water for household use, bathing, cleaning, or watering a plant in hopes of some colour to break the monotonous, dry, dirty surroundings. Even if the person is wealthy, there is still the strain to provide clean living quarters. It is an unforgiving dryness, penetrating our noses, irritating our eyes, always layering dust on our hair, and making us constantly thirsty.

In other regions, people could make claims of living in the wettest place on earth, with a daily rainfall to sustain life, and flora and fauna for all to enjoy, at no cost. Water brings quality of life and ease of enjoyment. Water is naturally suited for relaxation and recreation. Where there is water, there is the laughter of children playing and being clean. Water quenches our thirst. We can't live without it.

But according to Jesus, water also has a spiritual significance.

John 4:13-14 – Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (NIV)

We need spiritual water. And Jesus said that He is that water. As much as our physical life depends on water, we also need His water for spiritual life and peace. Without reading God's Word, we have an arid heart, forever longing. We need to water our souls by reading of Jesus and His love. He did not come to condemn the world, but to give life more abundantly.

John 10:10 – I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (KJV)

Israel wandered in the desert for forty years because of their disobedience. Let's not wander in the desert because we don't read of the wonderful grace of our God for abundant life.

Prayer: Thank you, Abba Father, for Your design to show us our soul's relationship to You. Give us thirst that only You can quench. May we desire Your Word, Your being, and Your peace. In Your Son's name, we pray. Amen.
