Exodus 2:10b – She named him Moses saying, "I drew him out of the water." (NIV)

Having the challenge of raising an autistic son, I am greatly inspired by Jochebed's demonstration of faith and courage to protect her son, Moses.

"Jochebed" means "Jehovah is her glory". It is a name that describes her strength of character and remarkable trust in the God of Israel despite the threat of Pharaoh to harm her child.

She must have depended totally on God's wisdom and guidance in developing a successful plan that would save Moses' life. Although Pharaoh had commanded that all male Israelite babies were to be thrown into the river, God inspired her to weave a basket-boat to float him there. She placed her baby in the waters of the Nile River, expecting that God would keep him safe from the edict of death. Although my son's life has never been in danger, I am constantly in need of the Lord's guidance to make important decisions that could affect his future. I, too, am placing my son in the hands of God.

As she placed him in the basket in the river, Jochebed put her faith into action, entrusting her baby son to God. God, in turn, fulfilled His purpose in the life of Moses, causing him to be found by Pharaoh's daughter, who then called for one of the Hebrew women to come to nurse the baby. Jochebed answered that call, and God allowed her son to be raised and educated in Pharaoh's court, and to become the greatest leader in Old Testament history.

As for me, God has already proven faithful by providing the strength needed to get through difficult times with my son, and He has equipped me with the understanding and skills required in teaching and helping my son to reach his full potential.

Many families are facing hardships today and need to be reminded that God is still in control. He will work out His divine plan, no matter what our circumstances may predict. He has given each of us a unique purpose to fulfill. Like Jochebed, let us put our faith into action by placing our trust in the living God and giving Him all the glory.

Prayer: Lord, help us to trust You in all of life's situations. Let our adversities become opportunities to serve You, that You may receive glory. Amen.
