Revelation 3:20 – Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. (ESV)

Recently at the office, I filled up my water bottle from the water cooler at the bottom of the stairs in the foyer. It is like me in the morning: slow. Tea always comes first in the morning, and for this, I need water. Hence the visit, so my body can attempt to re-connect with my brain cells — those that I have left — and vice versa, and homeostasis can be achieved.

As I bent over the cooler, I heard the voice of a young woman behind me blurt out in an excited manner, "Quick, Dave is coming!" Her voice was full of thrill and expectation, as she egged on her co-conspirator. Waiting for the cooler to do its work and being a naturally inquisitive person, I glanced behind me to find out what was going on.

There, up against the tall, nineteenth-century, arched door were two girls, pressed hard to stop Dave. Apparently, poor Dave was pushing with increased strength and perplexity against the other side of the door, whereupon, a blind girl and her escort arrived to go through the door, oblivious to the horseplay. Sheepishly, the girls relinquished their control and let her through. Then Dave, smiling, waltzed through the archway of the open door.

It made me reflect upon another David, and one of his descendants.

I can imagine all the expectancy, excitement, and hope for a deliverer, the Son of David, who was prophesied to arrive. With Him came the dominion of God into their brutal and occupied land over 2000 years ago.

It made me think: how excited are we about Jesus' arrival this Christmas?

Are we, heels wedged, holding the door closed, or are we allowing Him to enter our lives to bring joy into the "doing" that needs to be done?

Make no mistake: Jesus wants in!

Prayer: Lord, we long for Your love to permeate our very being, even as You sustain our lives to draw breath. Please forgive us when we obstruct Your entry into our lives, for which we repent as we say, "Enter, Jesus, Saviour of the world. Abide with us, Emmanuel." Amen.
