Mark 6:2-3a – The next Sabbath he went to the synagogue to teach, and the people were astonished at his wisdom and his miracles because he was just a local man like themselves. "He's no better than we are," they said. (TLB)

Mark 6:6 – And he was amazed at their lack of faith. (NIV)

The little girl in me could hardly believe it. In fact, she really didn't, until she landed on the soil, sniffed the air, heard the voices, and saw the sites of the Holy Land. I knew that Israel existed. I knew that I wanted to go. But never in my wildest dreams did I allow myself to think that the two would come together, even when I entered the plane with a ticket in my hand.

Christ must have felt something like that when he went to Nazareth. He knew it was there, and He knew he was going. Unfortunately, when the two came together, the result was not so good. Even though His wisdom and miracles were clearly evident, the people to whom He went chose not to believe.

Christ, present at the creation of the world, Christ who literally had seen everything and knew everything — was amazed in his little hometown. The Living Bible says that He could hardly accept the fact that they wouldn't believe in Him!

Every failure to make the right choice is a statement of unbelief. Where in our life with Christ are we unwilling to believe that He desperately wants us to accept the truth that wisdom and miracles are available to us?

Prayer: Lord, we believe. Help our unbelief. For Christ's sake, we pray. Amen.
