1 Corinthians 3:2-3 – I gave you milk to drink. I didn't give you solid food because you weren't ready for it. Even now you aren't ready for it because you're still influenced by your corrupt nature. When you are jealous and quarrel among yourselves, aren't you influenced by your corrupt nature and living by human standards? (GWT)

Years ago, we had a bush right outside our living room window. One summer, a pair of little sparrows built a nest in the bush. Next thing we knew, there were a few little eggs in that nest. It was so interesting to watch the adult birds come and go. There was always one sitting on those little eggs.

Often during the day, though, one of the adults would come flying up to the nest with a worm in its mouth. The adults knew exactly what kind of food those babies needed in order to grow. They didn't bring "bigger" food that they might possibly choke on. We watched as the adults fed those little babies day after day. How fast they grew! Within a very short time, those babies had grown big enough that they were trying their wings. We saw them on the lawn at first. Before long, they had flown off, and we never saw them again.

I thought about those babies, who were so dependent on their parents to be fed. They trusted their parents to bring them food — the food that they needed.

As new Christians, we need to be fed the milk of the Word of God. We can do it ourselves by reading the Bible. But as babes, we also need support and encouragement and teaching. Are we ready for stronger food? Do our jealousies and quarrelling among each other prevent us from growing? Even as more mature Christians, we need support and encouragement and teaching to help us past the rough times in life.

1 Peter 5:5 – All of you young people should obey your elders. In fact, everyone should be humble toward everyone else. The Scriptures say, "God opposes proud people, but he helps everyone who is humble." (CEV)

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we want to grow. Help us to humble ourselves and learn from others. Oh, how we need wise people in our lives. We love You, Jesus. Amen.
