Another humid summer day with scorching sunshine was challenging. A cold water bottle was growing hot, and a towel was needed to dry up the drips. The ground was sizzling as the sun kept sending more of its rays of heat to the cracking soil. Wild animals had disappeared; the birds were quietly hiding under the cool leaves of an old oak tree. The family dog dug a hole in the shady flower bed to keep cool. There were no clouds to be seen; no raindrops in sight. People were sighing, "This too shall pass."

Is a sudden heat wave pressing our spiritual nature down? Is fire-like heat burning our self-worth to ashes? Sometimes, it seems that something not fair is taking place and is getting to us, as we realize our own weaknesses in the light of what is happening, through hurtful devices at work against us. Such a deep encounter crushes the very spirit, layer upon layer, riveting hurt and pain together.

Our deep cry rises to God, as we ask Him to show us the way to endure, to forgive, and to love.

In such an encounter, one finds that God is not far. The still, small voice of God speaks of safety and comfort. God comforts His people. God brings His own to still waters and walks them to green pastures. He restores the soul and leads to the right paths — paths that we may not have seen before.

Prayer: Almighty and real God, it is a joy to be found in the right path. You are watching our steps between the boulders, paving the way to safety. Surely, goodness and mercy follow Your own all life long. Thank You for not abandoning us in our time of need. In Jesus' name, we speak. Amen.
