Ecclesiastes 3:6 – A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away. (KJV)

Psalm 78:7 – That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments. (KJV)

Four years ago, when our now almost-six-year-old granddaughter was "almost two", she and I found a feather together while out walking and exploring.

Immediately, she wanted me to bring it home with us and put it on the aerial of my car so that it could still fly in the wind. This I did, securing it with the remnants of four Mothers Against Drunk Drivers ribbons, each of which had been added brand new to my aerial each Christmas season.

The little black feather flew steadfast with the wind, having its symmetry knocked out of whack, but steadfast nevertheless. I did get the odd inquisitive person asking why it was there, but I was happy to tell them that it was from my granddaughter.

Recently, circumstances necessitated my getting a new car. As we live a body of water apart, when our daughter told our granddaughter about the new vehicle, the first thing she asked was, "Did she keep the feather?"!

I had, but it did not go on the aerial of the new car. This time, it lovingly went inside the front cover of the little Bible I keep in my car.

This incident gave pause to imagine God's reaction as we "go exploring": testing our ground, finding our way through our teenage years, our young adult years, sometimes venturing into other belief systems.

While He is with us always, His hope in us is that we will not forget His works, and that we will remember to keep His commandments.

Prayer: We give thanks, Lord, for those things You have given us: Your love, patience, kindness, understanding — the things that others can see in us and, when asked, we happily say come from You. We thank You for all Your works that we see each and every day, and we give thanks for Your commandments and the choice You have given us to keep them. In Your name, we pray. Amen.
