Ephesians 6:2 – "Honour your father and mother" — which is the first commandment with a promise. (NIV)

It was Mother's Day, and my son was in first grade. He was very upset because his dad was away on a trip and it was Mother's Day. He said, "What good is Mother's Day if I can't buy you a present?"

I said, "Mother's Day can be a day when mothers show their children how much they love them." We got busy and roasted a chicken, he helped me make his favourite pie, and we and his little sisters had a party. It was a Mother's Day they don't remember, I suppose, but one I will never forget. We were together and happy.

Another time, those children were grown up. Only a teenage sister remained, but she was off with friends, and I was alone and forgotten. The mail was late with cards. For a while, I felt sad, but then I made a batch of cookies. I took some to the bachelor next door, and wished him a Happy Mother's Day! We both laughed, and somehow Mother's Day wasn't that sad any more.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, give us grateful hearts for families and loving parents. Help us to be aware of mothers whose children are far away, and especially those whose sons and daughters are in the armed services. They need our thoughtfulness and love. Bless them; we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.
