Isaiah 28:2 – See, the Lord has one who is powerful and strong. Like a hailstorm and a destructive wind, like a driving rain and a flooding downpour, he will throw it forcefully to the ground. (NIV)

In Ontario, as the ice-covered streams and lakes begin to melt, we call it "the spring break-up". This year, it came with ease. Many of us are glad to think, "Off with winter and all that snow!"

Yet, how damaging spring floods can be, when tons of water fill the streams and lakes, which then overflow their banks. Catch basins, filled to the top, overflow when spring rains add to the melting snow.

As we wait for spring to bring new life to flourish in the land, we watch the destruction breaking loose, for example in the eastern province of New Brunswick. The rite of spring is overshadowed by the damage caused by widespread flooding. The very sun for which we have waited so long contributes to the melting and makes the flooding even worse.

Let us remember, though, that with the promise of God and the rite of spring, the earth will warm once more, and a balance will come in the season ahead.

So also in our lives, when turmoil turns into tragic circumstances, we have that same promise of God that gives hope to our hearts. No matter the tragedy we might have at this time, His grace and glory lie before us to balance the season ahead.

Prayer: Most gracious heavenly Father, we give thanks for the promise of spring and the balance in our seasons, as we see not only with our own eyes but also with the spiritual awakening in our hearts, to know Your grace and glory. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
