Luke 12:15 – Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." (NIV)

Every closet, cabinet, and drawer in my home is filled to capacity with things I've collected over 46 years of living in the same house. Being a sentimental person with a historical mind, I can not part with a single photo, newspaper clipping, school souvenir, or memento that has marked the passage of my life and that of my family. Much of this clutter could be organized on CDs and stored away for future generations for whom I claim to be saving these treasures. Even though with minimal effort I could scan and store this material on hard disks, I can not trust my treasures to be reduced to bytes.

I believe that God understands my sentimentality and my desire to preserve the history of my loved ones, but do I trust God to take care of this for me? After all, one house fire or natural disaster could destroy all my clutter in a few moments. If I trusted the computer disks, I could place them in a fireproof vault much more resistant to natural disasters.

Even though there is no material value involved in my treasures, they can stand between me and my relationship with God.

Luke 12:21 – That's what happens when you fill your barn with Self and not with God. (MSG)

God also tells us not to be anxious about tomorrow. He knows the needs of His children. Circumstances are not defined by what we desire, but by God's favour. We must eliminate our anxiety by placing our trust in Him Who handles all things.

Prayer: Father, we know You are faithful in carrying out Your promises. Help us to understand that all we have to do is trust in You. Amen.
