John 15:26-27 – When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning. (NIV)

Amos 3:3 – Do two walk together unless they've agreed to do so? (NIV)

In response to one of my recent devotionals which followed that of a fellow long-time contributor, she wrote "It's been a long time since we were back to back."

She was referring to our early days of contributing devotionals. Ten years ago, Daily was in its youth, and there weren't a lot of writers. Writing for Daily was new to us; we were eager, inspired, ten years younger. We had the time to devote, and we were enthusiastic and prolific contributors. So much so, that our devotionals often appeared back to back.

I thought about that, how we forge friendships, how people weave in and out of our lives, and how, through this medium, some of us have bonded so closely with people we are not likely ever to meet face-to-face. How trust and respect has built up through sharing thoughts and ideas about devotionals. How we were guided by an editor none of us knew. And I thought about the common bonds that first brought us together: our love of God and the development of a greater appreciation for all whom we are so freely given.

This can also be a reflection of our relationship with God: how, in our early days when first we learn of the Word of God, we start out enthusiastically. How, not knowing, but trusting, we jump in with both feet, and then, over the years, other things slowly take priority over the time we had so eagerly and readily devoted to Him.

Let us keep Him first and foremost in our daily lives. In the very least, let the first thing we think of upon waking, the last thing we do at night, and throughout the day in between, be a word of thanks to our Maker.

Prayer: Lord, we know we often fail in our devotion to You. May we be ever thankful for even the seemingly smallest of things for which to be grateful to You throughout the day. In Your name we pray. Amen.
