Matthew 6:19-20 – Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. (NKJV)

We live in a relatively new housing and retail development in our city. As the homes are built, we watch people move in and work on the landscaping and fencing. Then up go the sheds (or storage places) in their yards. Over time, as we drive past these homes, we see the open garage doors and can't help but notice the areas inside becoming full of acquired stuff.

Recently, I noticed that within a five mile range of our home, not one, but two, self-storage complexes were being built. People can go and rent units in various sizes to put their belongings in and then take the key. Access to these storage areas is available seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. Your guess is as good as mine as to why a person would need this much access time!

Just think of the time that is spent driving to and from these storage places, and the sorting that people do with their earthly possessions, and the importance that we can place on these things if we are not careful.

Luke 12:21 – Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God. (NLT)

Prayer: Dear Jesus, help us to see that storing up treasures on this earth is not what You have called us to do. May we grow and develop our relationship with You first, so that we can be Your hands and feet to a world filled with people storing up treasures. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
