Matthew 25:21 – His master replied, "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!" (NIV)

Running up the church steps, I stopped abruptly, partly because my way was blocked and partly because of the intense emotion I experienced when I saw what was happening in front of me. A well-dressed woman huddled over an elderly gentleman in a wheelchair. At first glance, I wondered if the man had taken ill, but when I moved closer, he smiled up at me, and his face — which was more wrinkled than the long-lost potato at the back of my vegetable cupboard — lit up.

Paying no attention to her immaculate dress, the lady was busy tying a leather moccasin on his bandaged foot, and the part that wasn't bandaged wasn't pretty.

"Hi! Do ya' see my new boots?" the man asked.

"They're great!" I answered. "Keep your toes warm. It's cold out today!" After she was finished tying the moccasin, the lady straightened, and I realized she was probably older than the gentleman in the wheelchair. I nodded and smiled, then took my seat in the sanctuary, but the picture of the woman bending over the wheelchair and helping to dress the feet of this elderly gentleman wouldn't leave my mind. She gave no thought to the fact that she was wearing her dress-up clothes. She was more concerned that the gentleman's feet were warm.

To me, Marie was putting into action one of the great principles taught in the Bible story where the Good Samaritan stops on his journey and helps a stricken traveller. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we too could show God's love by serving someone in need?

Prayer: Dear God, we come today asking You to bring someone to our attention who needs to see a demonstration of Your love. Help each of us to develop a servant's heart. Amen.
