1 Corinthians 10:4 – And all of them drank the same spiritual water. For they drank from the spiritual rock that travelled with them, and that rock was Christ. (NLT)

Not long ago, I read the novel, No Great Mischief by Alistair MacLeod, with interest, perhaps because his characters were so much like some of the people I had met while I lived in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. The descendents of the early settlers were hard workers and were fiercely loyal to their families, churches, and communities. Often, life seemed to have dealt them a harsh blow. Some experienced the untimely death of a family member in the mines. Others were enslaved by unconquerable debt, chained to a lifestyle where they worked to earn a living, but the benefits went to the distant owners of the mines or off-island landowners. In the book, MacLeod refers to a stone that marked an ancestor's resting place. Apparently, this stone marker hugged dangerously close to the ocean and glistened in the sunlight after it had been washed by the waves during a storm.

When I read this, my mind jumped to another scene. On our journey through life, we seem to be washed over by repeated waves from illness, broken relationships, financial concerns — all examples of life's storms. I have found during the storms in my life — through our daughter's journey with cancer and in times of stress or concern — that God's love has shone brighter, glistening in the Sonlight. In His Son, Jesus Christ, we have a place of refuge, a place of strength, and a place where we can find solid ground.

Prayer: Dear God, what a privilege we have to be able to find shelter in Your love during the stormy periods of our lives. Thank You for showing that You care so deeply. Amen.
