When I was young, I lived close Lake Ontario. Sometimes I could hear the lake freighters blasting their foghorns. It was usually in a thick fog that they gave out three short blasts, followed by a quiet silence that brought a distant return of a foghorn, from a ship much further away.

This was the warning signal used to avoid what could be a disastrous collision.

When thick fog covers the lake, any boat that is not equipped with radar or a compass can very quickly lose its bearings. In such cases, the blast of a foghorn from a known lighthouse would be a welcome sound to give direction. Similarly, there are many souls who wander around in a spiritual fog, not knowing what direction their lives are taking, and making choices involving actions and reactions that set them on a collision course with disaster. God's Word is like the blast of a foghorn to those who read it or hear it spoken, warning of the consequences of the choices we make and allowing us to set a new course according to God's compass.

Prayer: Dear Lord, enable us in prayer to help lift the fog that some find so very hard to see through. May they hear the sound of danger that surrounds them and find their way out to a safe port on their journey to a new home and a new life in Jesus. Amen.
