Psalm 92:14-15a – They will still bear fruit in old age; they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming "The Lord is upright." (NIV)

In the library, I came across a book on antiques. It was filled with pictures of old furniture and other antique items. Below the pictures were the dollar values. Some articles were highly priced; others were not. Their value as stated, though, was only what the appraiser considered them to be worth.

There are many elderly people in our society. Are they valued? I guess it depends on what society thinks they are worth. Some elderly people experience poor health and are considered by some to be too old to be useful. Others are highly valued by their loved ones. God, however, values us no matter how old or frail we have become.

Matthew 6:26 – Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? (NIV)

Our elders have a lot of wisdom to pass on to this generation. All we have to do is listen to them. We should value them and treat them with love and respect. I once heard an eighty-one-year-old sick woman say, "I have to live longer so that I can pray for my family." This is one of the greatest gifts to receive: to have someone pray for you. This woman shows us that we are never too old to serve God.

How many times have we heard an adult grandchild say, "If it weren't for my grandmother's prayers, where would I be today?" Even God says they will still bear fruit in old age!

Prayer: – O God, You Who are so much wiser than we are, please help us to respect our elders, and help us to remember that they are of great value to our society. Amen.
