Psalm 121:1-2 – I lift up my eyes to the hills — where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. (NIV)

An elderly lady with a walker was ahead of me, when the automatic door refused to open and had to be operated manually. I watched as she approached the door, placed her walker against it, and began to push. I rushed to her rescue and offered to open the door. "I can do it," she said. "I don't need your help."

"I know you can," I said, "but if you let me help, it will be easier, and I'll feel good doing it for you."

"All right," she smiled. "Stated that way, I'll let you do it."

Society today respects the strong and self-sufficient, even to the point of forcing people who need help to deny their need. This also deprives people who have the desire to help others — often to the point of destroying relationships that could have been beneficial to both parties.

The Psalmist asks, "Where does my help come from?" Then he answers, "from the Lord." Most of the time, the Lord works through people to help others. To deny help from a well-wisher might well be denying the help God is trying to give us.

At some time or other, we all need help. This help may come from other Christians, from friends, from family, or from well-meaning strangers.

Living in God's love sometimes means accepting help when it is offered. Pride may block love's flow and prevent a blessing to both parties involved.

Prayer: Lord, remind us that living in Your love sometimes means accepting help from others. Love always involves a receiver as well as a giver. Open each of our hearts to Your love that is offered to all. In Your name, we pray. Amen.
