Ah! Christmas time! Part of Christmas is the music. I often sit listening, enthralled by those wonderful carols that we all have heard from childhood, and for which we know all the words for the first verse — and often the second and third as well! Let us stop and listen! Can we hear the beautiful melodies of "Silent Night, Holy Night", "Hark the Herald Angels Sing", "O Come All Ye Faithful", and "What Child Is This"? The harmony is beautiful! There are melodious major chords. Do we hear the minor chords as well? Let's listen carefully. Ah! They are beautiful also.

This has made me think about the beauty of the season — how Jesus willingly came to earth as a beautiful, precious baby. Listen to that! It makes our hearts quicken. That is the major chord.

What about the minor chords then? They are beautiful too — in a different way. The reason for the season is so that Jesus would grow up and die for us! Ooh! That grates on us. Listen to that chord as it is drawn out and held. The beauty in Jesus' death could be likened to a minor chord. It was a hard thing for Him to go through — but in the end, it has brought beauty to the hearts of those who accept Him.

Ah! The reason for the season! When we hear those minor chords, let's praise God for sending His Son to earth for us.

Prayer: Thank You for the gift of music which You have given us. How we love those wonderful carols which echo through our minds at this time of year. May we be drawn closer to You at this Christmas time, thanking You for what You have done for us. Amen.
