Isaiah 9:2 – The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. (NIV)

Most of the year, my street is dark. It is a curving road with lots of trees and shrubs — not a friendly way after darkness has fallen. But in early December, something happens to turn the darkness into light. This street is known for being decorated with lights during the Christmas season. Several years ago, a family at the end of the street near the cul-de-sac put up a manger scene complete with the shepherds, angels, wise men, animals, etc. Others on the street began to join in the decorating, until the yard of every house had lights of some kind. Word spread about the beautiful lights on our street, and soon there were long lines of traffic in our neighbourhood during this time of year. We became known as the street with the beautiful Christmas lights.

No longer was our street dark and sinister; it was filled with lights and people seeking the Christmas spirit. This reminded me of what the Advent season is all about. In lighting up our house and yards, we prepare our lives for the true light Whose coming we celebrate on Christmas Day and Who lights up our lives.

During Advent, we prepare our hearts and refocus our eyes on Jesus. Scripture tells us that those walking in darkness have seen a great light. On the night in Bethlehem when the baby Jesus was born in the manger, that great light came to earth.

Like my street, if we prepare our hearts during Advent and focus on Jesus, the light will shine, dispelling the darkness that has previously shadowed it.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your light that brings comfort, healing, and love. Help us to slow down during this Advent season and see the light You have given us in Jesus Christ. Amen.
