Exodus 14:15 – Then the Lord said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward." (NASB)

Our son skidded by the group of relatives gathered over coffee at the family reunion. His older cousin, in hot pursuit, traced his footsteps through the crowd. We scattered for the second time, in every direction. Mothers admonished. Fathers threatened. Smaller children took up the chase. Just barely audible above the din, we heard Charles mutter breathlessly, "Feet, don't fail me now!" (And they didn't! He escaped!)

Oh, that our feet were always so dependable. God has often called us to move into a situation or away from a conversation, and our feet have stayed fastened, as if rooted in the ground. It's not that we couldn't move them; it is that we chose not to. We might be amazed and ashamed if we knew the consequences of our actions. Who might have come to know Jesus if we had walked forward? Whose reputation might still be intact if we had walked away? How would our life be different? What mark might we have left for Jesus?

God will not do for us what we can do for ourselves.

Prayer: Lord, when we pray for courage to do great things, please also give us enough sense to move our feet — in the right direction. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
