Proverbs 10:23 – Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool, but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding. (ESV)

One recent evening, I came upon a student who was talking on a mobile telephone in the computer suite where I work. We do not allow casual mobile-phone ring-tones being used, because students are here to work on their assignments. The noise and chatter is quite counterproductive to a positive learning environment.

I stopped and waited at the end of the aisle where the student was seated, until such a time that she looked up and connected her gaze with mine. Subsequently, she looked a little sheepish, and I made a glance with my eyes towards the door as a subtle hint to continue the conversation outside in the corridor. Nothing was said, and she finished the call before things escalated to the next level. I guess she explained to the caller that there was a big man dropping heavy hints for her to desist.

In the past, I have had to loom large on others who think that they can do just what they want and get away with ignoring the rules of conduct, displayed on the walls, whilst in the computer suite. Now there is seldom the need. Mutual respect is understood by all — apart from the inevitable "wise guys"!

It made me consider how sometimes we just know that God is watching over us, looking. Nothing is said, but we, in turn, know that we are obliged to desist from whatever we are doing wrong according to His rules.

God is gracious and gentle, yet also holy and just. A nod and a glance are usually enough for us to take the hint, but woe betide anyone who invokes the need for further action!

I wonder if God is smiling down on us today.

Prayer: Lord, we rejoice in Your love that shows grace towards us. Please forgive us when we go astray, and direct our paths in the way that we should go. Lord, we want to live by Your rules and guidance, because You died to set us free from sin. Please grant to us the wisdom and courage to understand what this means for our lives today, in the name of Jesus. Amen.
