Psalm 91:9-10 – If you make the Most High your dwelling — even the Lord, who is my refuge — then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. (NIV)

When my husband was diagnosed with lung cancer, I was terrified. He had just finished treatment for prostate cancer, and here was another kind. "One-third of his lung will have to be removed," the doctor said.

"Will that cure it?" I asked.

"Temporarily," the doctor said. "He might be cancer-free for five years, but this type of cancer has a way of reappearing somewhere else in a different part of the lung."

I knew I would get no guarantee of future success from medical science. A Christian friend referred me to Psalm 91. "Read it over and over," she said. "It will teach you that God is your dwelling place. Under His wings you will find a constant faithfulness — God's shield — that will cover you by the shadow of the Almighty."

Psalm 91:15 – He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him. (NIV)

These promises are given to anyone who by an act of will places self under the care and protection of the living God. We are exhorted to cast our burdens upon Him, to call on His name, and to abide in His dwelling place. He will protect us because we acknowledge His name.

Prayer: Jesus Christ our Lord, Who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, let us enter Your dwelling place and call on Your holy name. Because You love us, You will rescue and protect us and let no harm befall us. As long as we continue in Your love, You will be our refuge and our salvation. In Your name, we pray. Amen.
