Isaiah 12:3 – With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. (NIV)

The greatest physical need some have in our world today is for drinkable water. After living for a few years on the Canadian Prairies, where our well water had to be filtered and then softened, I have a new appreciation for the abundant supply of soft water spilling from the taps in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where I live now. A few weeks ago, I visited Cleveland Dam in North Vancouver, which holds back the reservoir of drinking water for Vancouver, and I marvelled that we had so much water "on tap" that torrents ran over the dam and thundered into the canyon below. Supply and quality of drinkable water vary greatly across this land, but for the most part, we are not anxious about whether we'll have enough water to meet our needs, let alone survive.

The woman at the well in John 4 lived in a harsh land, and as dust traced her steps from the city to the well, she was focused on drawing the water necessary to maintain life. Having met Jesus, she ran back to the city without her water pot, but with her soul touched by the Saviour and with her spiritual thirst satisfied — "a well of water springing up into everlasting life". Yes, fresh water is vital to sustain life. So is the need to bring water from the wells of salvation to the masses of people thirsting for something to satisfy their souls. In Christ there is "enough for all".

Prayer: Father, help us to be so attuned that we may meet not only the physical needs of those in thirst, but also their spiritual need by directing them to the Saviour, Jesus Christ. Help us to have a new appreciation as we turn on the tap and are reminded of Your daily blessings. Amen.
