2 Timothy 2:20-21 – In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. (NIV)

Dishes have always been of special interest to me. I have "everyday dishes" and "good china", and for those really relaxed days, I have two-sectioned plates that are microwave safe. My good china is taken out of the china cabinet on special occasions when I want to honour people visiting me.

In order to use any of my dishes, they must be clean. The everyday dishes and the microwave dishes can be used straight off the shelf, but the good china must be washed before use because it has gathered dust sitting in the cabinet since last washed.

Like the dishes, we must be clean and ready to be used if we are to be of value to Christ and His church. Just as we don't always know when special company is going to come into our home, we don't know exactly at what time Jesus will have special need of our services.

The dishes are dirty on the outside only. A little water and soap will soon have them clean and ready for use. Our uncleanliness is within. If we allow our hearts to become dusty from sin, how will we know when we are called to be of service?

Cleanliness and readiness are vital for those who would be good and willing servants of Christ. What is revealed on the outside starts with the condition of the heart within. To serve effectively, we must be clean in both areas.

Psalm 24:3-4 – Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. (KJV)

Psalm 24:3-4 – Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. (NIV)

Prayer: Lord, help us to keep our hearts clean and open to honour You when You call. We know that only the heart in tune with You can hear the call when it comes. Amen.
