Psalm 37:16 – Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked. (NIV)

At Christmastime, I bought gift cards for my grandchildren. I bought inexpensive notebooks for the boys and scrapbooks for the girls and attached the cards to them. This added weight to the packages so they would not guess what was in the box. Jokingly, I told the girls to make scrapbooks for me for my birthday. One, a creative artist and writer, took me seriously. On my birthday, she had drawn pictures and written little stories, filling the pages of the scrapbook.

It was one of the most precious gifts I've ever received. She filled page after page with love and praise for her "mema". The page that really filled my heart with joy and brought tears to my eyes was the following: "I would rather be poor and have you, than to be rich, because you make everything rich with love."

Besides being proud that my granddaughter appreciated my love, I was filled with awe that an eleven-year-old child grasped this great truth. She has learned early in life what is truly valuable. My prayer is that life will not rob her of this belief. In writing to Timothy, Paul gave him the following advice:

1 Timothy 6:17 – Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. (NIV)

Whether we have much money or very little, God has made it possible for us to have a rich relationship with Him. What greater gift can one person give to another than to make their life rich with love?

Prayer: Lord, thank You for making our lives rich with Your love. Empower us to pass that love on to others, that they may be rich also. Amen.
