Romans 11:29 – God's gifts and his call are irrevocable. (NIV)

Several years ago in the midst of a bitterly cold Quebec winter, I was sitting in the middle of a church service when I felt a strong urge to study music. At the time, a very dedicated pastor would announce the hymn, then make his way to the piano and plunk out the notes to the best of his limited ability. I had never played before, but music had been part of my parents' home, and that day, I felt as though God wanted me to do my part to help others worship Him by learning to play.

However, I didn't realize what obstacles would be put in my way, the first being that my future piano teacher had reservations about the commitment of her adult students. "I'm not sure I want to take on any adults at this time," she told me. "The only ones I've taught up to this point have started with a lot of enthusiasm, but as soon as the practicing gets in the way of family activities, the lessons are forgotten." Oh, was I doomed to fail before I even began? I was tempted to go home right there and then, but I didn't. Why? Because I had felt a call and made a commitment to God, so I stuck with it.

Over the next two years, Margaret, not her real name, pointed out the various things I needed to know in order to play the piano. And yes, she was right; it was harder for me to make progress — but what made me stick with the lessons was that I felt God wanted to use my music in some small way — and He did. I quickly went through the grades, taught, and played in small churches where we worshipped for nearly thirty years. I learned that if God calls us to do something for Him, He will give us the strength to continue against all obstacles that may be put in our way.

Prayer: Dear God, help us to know You will never ask us to do anything that is too hard for us and You to do together. Amen.
