Years ago when I was a child, my aunt told me about finding a twig on the street. She took the twig home and sanded it, cut it, varnished it, and made a beautiful necklace from it. She applied this to what Jesus does to us when He finds us and saves us. I thought it was so neat that she could find a spiritual lesson in such a simple thing.

As an adult, I met someone who could also see spiritual lessons in everything. I was amazed at her ability to do this.

I never consciously prayed about it; in fact, I never really thought much more about it. Looking back, I realize that God was working in my heart — even as a child. He put a desire in me to see spiritual lessons in everyday events. I had to go on a bumpy road for quite a few years, though, in order to apply everyday things to my spiritual life. Now, there isn't often a day that goes by that I don't see a spiritual application to something I experience or observe.

Even though I didn't know it at the time, I had the desire to grow and to see God in every situation, and to paint a word picture to share with others.

I give Him all the glory and honour for planting that seed so many years ago. My desire now is to use this gift to encourage and bless and strengthen others.

What desire has God put in our hearts? Maybe we aren't even aware of it yet. Let's be open to His speaking to us and leading us one day at a time.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You know us better than we know ourselves. You have put desires in our hearts — desires that we may not be aware of yet. You are faithful, and You will lead us on Your path if we are willing to listen and obey. Help us, O Lord. Amen.
