Matthew 10:31 – So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. (NIV)

Luke 12:27 – Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. (NIV)

When I worked in medical records, an efficiency expert was brought into the department to streamline the assembling of the medical records. He pointed out each step, emphasizing the importance of each person's contribution and their role in the total operation. My job was information release. I had no part in the assembly. Only afterward, when the chart was assembled in the right order, was it valuable to me. I copied certain parts of the record for those requesting information for insurance purposes or for transfer of medical information to other hospitals. (This was in the days before computerized records and fax machines.)

From that day forth, I felt of little value to the department, since it had been pointed out that my job was of less importance than others'. Even though my job was in demand and even produced revenue for the department, I couldn't help thinking of the job descriptions and how mine was of lesser value.

It all depends from what angle others view us and our contributions. Sometimes we can feel worthless because of the ways others view our job description, our social status, or our ethnic classification.

Jesus reminds us that in His kingdom, we are each of value. We are of more value than many sparrows. We should never feel worthless as long as we are connected to the Father and His Word. Our worth in His kingdom does not depend on the job description we are given, our social status, or the colour of our skin.

Prayer: Father, we know You care when even one of Your sparrows falls. How much more You care for us! Thank You. Amen.
