Matthew 5:14-16 – You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Nether do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (NIV)

I was on a tour bus heading for Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico, and our destination for the night. The sun had set over the dark Mexican countryside, and the only lights available in the darkness were the bus lights — that is, until we got near enough to Taxco to see its lights. It is a town of 90,000 built on a hill, and, at night, its lights can be seen for many miles, like a lighted mountain beckoning the traveller to come and see.

As we travelled on through the darkness toward the beckoning lights ahead, I thought of the Scripture, "You are the light of the world." I couldn't wait to arrive at this place that lit up the darkness. I wanted to be within its light.

Christ tells us that we are the light of the world. In the spiritual darkness of the world, Christians are to shine as lights. Even a small light can do a great deal to dispel the darkness.

As Christians, we are not supposed to be invisible. We possess light and truth that the world greatly needs. We are to let this light shine — like a city built on a hill — to attract others to come and find the source of the light.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the light You have given us. May we let it shine to light up the darkness for those who seek the light of Your truth. Amen.
