Luke 11:28 – He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it." (NIV)

I was observing a robin as he scurried along through the tall green grass. He moved quickly, then stopped, tilted his head, and bang — down went his beak into the ground. Often he came up empty. Then he got one, and it was a long pull as he struggled with the worm. How did he get it: by sight or by sound?

Not being that familiar with the senses that direct the bird's feeding, I don't know — but whichever it was, it worked for him.

What works for us?

When we do our reading of Scripture, it is by sight that we read, but it is by sound that we conceive what it is God wants us to hear when He speaks to us. Sometimes, like the robin, we come up empty, but when God wants to feed us and we are ready to listen, though it might seem a struggle, we will come to understand.

In our time of reading Scripture, we all need to ponder and listen, dive deep down into His Word. And when we do, we will come up rewarded by what it says, either by sight or by sound.

2 Corinthians 3:3 – You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. (NIV)

All praise be to Him, for it is He who guides us with the Spirit, not written on stones but established in our hearts forever.

Prayer: Dear Lord, You come to us in various ways so that we might know Your Word. May we see and hear by the Spirit that is in us, either by sight or by the sound of Your voice. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
