1 Corinthians 15:41 – The sun has one kind of glory, while the moon and stars each have another kind. And even the stars differ from each other in their beauty and brightness. (NLT)

I turned to see where my house guest was. Had she stumbled in the dark? "Gloria," I called, "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," she replied. "I just can't move." My first thoughts were that she'd probably tripped on our sidewalk or caught her coat in the car door, so I rushed back to find her in the dark. I unlocked the car door to give me some light, and in the dim light, I could see that she was looking up at the night sky, where, in an amazing display, stars were winking and twinkling at us. Even though I had seen displays like this many times, I stood in awe as together, like two school girls, we pointed out the various constellations.

Finally, we came inside, and as Gloria took off her jacket, she said, "I don't remember seeing stars like that." I was surprised at her comment, but then my guest explained, "I live in New York City, and the lights and tall buildings hide the stars."

After she left that evening, I went outside one more time and stood for several minutes in our yard looking at the stars and listening to the night peepers. I marvelled at the Creator of this display and wondered at my guest who had not been able to see its beauty before. It reminded me of the times in our lives when we can't seem to find God. God hasn't moved; He has been there all along and is still there — ready to reveal Himself to us — but we've let other things come between ourselves and God.

Prayer: Dear God, it is so easy to allow the clutter of life to come between us and You. In the dark times, help us to look up and see that You are there. Amen.
