Listen while you read: "When We All Get To Heaven"1
(Lyrics) |
John 4:14 – But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. (NIV)
1 John 1:7 – But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (NIV)
As fall approached and since we had given up travelling south for the winter, I decided to bring the geraniums that were still blooming into the house.
For some time they continued to bloom; then, one by one, they faded away, until only the green of the plant was left. Slowly they became rather straggly as they continued to grow, reaching up for the light. I thought of cutting them back, but was afraid they might die in the process.
These plants had not seen anything yet. We eventually did take a trip south for a few weeks, and then upon our return, we left for a tour of Italy. Each time before leaving, I watered these plants — not really expecting them to survive.
Well, they struggled enough for me to be able to strip the brown leaves off and place them in the garden. Today colour has returned to the leaves, and once more the geraniums have bloomed!
As I observed the plant life, I realized that, spiritually speaking, we all need light and water or we become straggly, much like my geraniums, groping for the light to fill us once more with strength that only light can bring. Though we go through drought and our spiritual lives seem dry, there is still hope. When we are fed with the living water and placed in the light, we will once more begin to grow.
Prayer: Almighty and ever-loving Father, we give thanks that we may come before You this day to receive the living water. As we drink from the fountain, renew us in Your light. Restore us to full bloom, growing in Your garden of life. We come to You in and through our one and only mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.
