Ephesians 3:18 – And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is. (NLT)

My husband and I didn't go south for our retirement trip; instead, we headed west. While travelling through the Rocky Mountains, we stopped to see the Columbia Ice Field and took a trip on the snow coach to the mouth of the glacier. As we made our way across the snow and ice, our guide explained, "The ice from here feeds three of the earth's great oceans."

I stood in the early spring sunshine and marvelled: our God planned all of this for the benefit of His creation. He planned that the tiny trickle of water in this rocky river bed would cut a path through gigantic mountains. He planned that this trickle would grow into a river that would wind its way through the deep fertile valleys until it fed into the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Arctic Oceans.

To me, this illustration from nature is a reminder of God's love. Early on, when we first learn that His Son, Jesus, came to earth to take the penalty for our sins, our understanding of His love can be likened to a tiny trickle. As we hear more about God's love, our understanding continues to grow. His love wears down our hardened hearts until we realize our need to ask Jesus to forgive us for our sins. As we begin a personal relationship with Him, we begin to discover how wide, how long, how high, and how deep God's love really is — for His love grows and grows until it becomes an ocean.

Prayer: Dear God, we marvel at the details found in Your creation, and we stand in awe of Your immeasurable love. Amen.
