John 4:13-14 – Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (NIV)

On Easter Sunday last week, we were all handed a flower at the entrance into the sanctuary. This was to be placed on the plain black cross, left there from Good Friday.

One by one, the flowers made the cross come alive, along with the thought that Jesus is risen and is alive today. At the conclusion of the service, the flowers were removed for people to take home in remembrance of Him.

When I went on into the grand hall for fellowship, I left by another door, not passing the cross. Towards the end of the fellowship, as the hall emptied, I stood without a flower. A young woman came to me with a bunch of flowers and handed them to me.

Awkwardly, I fumbled to take just one, when she said, "No, take them all," which I did. Afterwards, as I left walking towards the car, someone made mention of the bunch of flowers I had in my arms. I looked back at that person and, smiling, said, "I suppose they thought it was for the dear old lady who hadn't taken any flowers!"

When I got home, I carefully placed the flowers in a vase and watched them enjoy renewed life as the stems drew up refreshing water.

Whether we grow old, or just mature, God gives to each one of us renewal and refreshment with His water of life, and He gives new strength to us to keep on working for Him in and through the power of the Holy Spirit. We do this in remembrance of Him.

Prayer: Dear Lord and Father of us all, give to each, as we mature in body and in spirit, the strength to carry on in life, to do Your will, to love one another, and to remember the gift You gave to each one of us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
