1 Corinthians 2:9 – That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him." (NLT)

There's a place I look forward to visiting — perhaps because I'm familiar with its landmarks and all that they represent to me — but I dislike the journey enough that I don't go there nearly as often as I should. The place is the island of my birth, Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Canada. To reach the island often involves long line-ups and waits for the car ferry. It has meant putting my faith in the captain's ability to guide the ship during dense fog and believing in his ability to bring the ship into the harbour safely when we've experienced a particularly rough crossing. But no matter how rough the crossing nor how foggy it has been on the water, I know that when I see the light from Swallowtail I am almost home.

As I drive off the ferry and make my way down the road, I begin to forget about the length of the journey and the discomfort of the long waits or rough seas. Instead, I begin to anticipate the greeting I am about to receive from my loved ones. I know my mom will be making dinner and my dad will be sweeping the doorstep, which is his way of waiting for me to drive up the driveway. The car will barely come to a stop before both of my parents will come running to give me a hug. Their warm welcome makes the long journey worthwhile.

Sometimes our journey here on earth seems long. There are delays, times when the way is rough, or when we appear to be in a deep fog and can't see the way ahead. That is when we need to depend on God, our captain, assured that He knows the way and will lead us to a safe haven, heaven — our eternal home. Jesus will be waiting for us there, for He has gone ahead to prepare the mansion, and when we are welcomed into our Saviour's loving arms, we will forget the journey — for we are home.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for taking care of us each day as we journey through life. Continue to guide us through the times when we lose sight of the way, and bring us safely home. Amen.
