Psalm 139:17-18 – How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you. (NIV)

When I was a child, I loved waking up each day. My head swam with visions of the exciting things which might await me. If my parents had not yet awakened and I had to wait for them to do so, how the minutes dragged by! I still start each day with the same sense of anticipation: what exciting adventure will my Lord lead me to today?

However, now that I have retired and am not obliged to arise each day on schedule, I am finding a new delight. On waking, I now can lie for a moment or so, simply relishing the luxury of not having to jump up and rush to get to work. Oh, the joy of spending these precious moments relaxing in His arms, enjoying the assurance of His loving care!

This must be a foretaste of heaven. How wonderful to remember that after we fall asleep for the last time here, we will awaken in His glorious presence! Surrounded by God, in the presence of the saints who have gone before, seeing the splendour of the mansion that Jesus has gone to prepare for those who love Him, I don't think that we will want to linger, to sleep another moment! It will be that "great getting up morning"; we will be there because Jesus died to enable us to go. "Oh, that will be glory for me!"

Prayer: Beloved Jesus, Your Word says that no eye has seen the joys that await those You love. It is more than enough, Lord, to know that we shall be like You, for we shall see You, face to face. As we await that great day, help us so to live, doing what You would do, loving as You would love. Amen.
