As a child, I heard many fascinating stories about what was on the moon — one of the first being the story about the cow that jumped over the moon. Someone told me that there was a man on the moon, placed there for burning trash on Sunday. As I watched the moon, trying to see this man's face, I found that it had many shapes and faces, depending on the time of the month.

When I became an adult, man walked on the moon and exploded many of the myths that I'd heard as a child. I learned that the moon has no light of its own. It is a dead, desolate, and depressing place, with no light or colour, yet from the earth at night, we see that it reflects the sun and is transformed into a beautiful source of light.

As I thought of how the moon, having no light of its own, can reflect the sun's light, it occurred to me that as Christians this is what we should do. When we invite the Holy Spirit to live within us, we begin to reflect the character of Christ. The Spirit helps us to grow, to become like Christ, as we open our minds and hearts to follow Him. We move out of the shadows into the light, and it is reflected through us. This is not something that we do through human effort; it is only by relying on Christ and following His instructions.

Prayer: Lord, help us to grow in Your Spirit and reflect Your light, so that others may want to follow You. Use us to cast a reflecting glow that shines toward others, giving them light for their paths. Amen.
