Psalm 18:28 – For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness. (ESV)

Matthew 6:22-23 – The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! (ESV)

On Mondays, I start work at lunchtime and continue until 9:00 p.m. I try not to leave my getting ready to the last minute, because I like to arrive at work without being in a state of stress. However, I attempt not to let this desire for organisation take up too much of my time, which is given over to doing chores, shopping, or just relaxing.

One day recently, I wanted to give myself enough time not to be peddling through town flat out on my bicycle in my effort to arrive on time, as has sometimes been the case! In the event, I had time enough to sit down and read a little Bible before my departure. As I got up to leave, I was prompted from within that it was a Monday, and that I would be riding home in the dark. This meant the need for packing my cycle lights, which I duly did.

Cyclists who have no lights in the dark cannot see potential dangers, and are an unseen hazard to themselves and others. I think it can be fairly said that so too are those who are not in the kingdom of God. Well-intentioned, they can not only harm themselves but also leave others in their wake damaged or destroyed, without God's light to guide them.

Through Jesus, we have God's Spirit to illuminate our paths, to show the way, and to provide a light not only for ourselves, but also for others to follow in our wake. We carry this hope of eternal life with us, dark or light, wherever we go, because God's heart-desire for His loved ones is to see us safely home.

I believe others in darkness see this light in us and are drawn to seek grace's Author. So let us keep peddling, and remember to check our batteries!

Prayer: Lord, we rejoice that we find hope and light in You. In Your mercy, as we once again come to You, grant us Your forgiveness and cleansing, so that we might become acceptable vessels for Your light of life in us today. Amen.
