Deuteronomy 16:12 – You shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and you shall be careful to observe these statutes. (NASB)

When my children were growing up, I worked in the school system, as well as having contact with the young people who were my children's friends and classmates. My children now have children of their own, as do others of their generation. Frequently, I meet some of them I knew so well years ago. They have changed much more than I have. I was already an adult. They have changed from children into middle-aged adults. "I remember you," they always say. "Do you remember me?"

When I am able to recall their names and mention some detail about that period of time, they are always delighted, and I feel good too. It's a "downer" for us both when we cannot connect in our memories.

After checking, I found that the word remember is used 163 times throughout the Bible.

In the Old Testament, Israelite memory looks back to the time of slavery in Egypt and how God had led them out into the promised land.

The New Testament continues this memory every time the Lord's Supper is celebrated. We hear the minister say:

Luke 22:19 – And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." (NIV)

We can pass on our faith and heritage by sharing memories of the times God has blessed us. Sharing stories of the good times we have enjoyed in the fellowship of other Christians may inspire others to remember and want to belong.

Prayer: Lord, remind us to share our good memories with others. By doing so, we may glorify Your name. Amen.
